Charleston Roofing Contractors

Updated: Feb 4, 2020

Your roof is a key component of the entire structure of your home. When a roof replacement is performed correctly, it delivers decades of protection. As with any home improvements or maintenance items, choosing the right contractor is key to the success and longevity of the investment.

Key Tips for Selecting a Qualified Roofing Contractor:

  • Verify that the contractor is licensed through the South Carolina Labor, Licensing and Regulation (SCLLR) You can click here to verify that they are licensed and up to date with their insurance bond: SCLLR Licensee Lookup

  • Request that a permit be pulled for the scope of work to be done. Every municipality in the Tri-County area requires a permit to be pulled for a roof replacement.

  • Request that the contractor provide a statement, in writing, that they follow the manufacturers installation guidelines.

  • Verify that the contractor has BOTH General Liability and Workers Compensation insurance policies that coves roof replacement. Insurance companies provide Certificates of Insurance (COI) upon request. This can be done by email or fax. The COI should be received directly from the insurance company, not a contracting company employee.

  • Request a list of references from previous clients who have had similar work performed.

  • Reputable companies do not need a downpayment to purchase materials.

Other considerations include certifications for specific installations such as GAF, Hydrostop, Owens Corning, etc. Normally, these certifications provide the client a better warranty option for the workmanship in addition to the manufacturers warranty. There are several referral agencies such as Angie's List, Craft Jack, and Home Advisor (to name a few) that can offer further piece of mind. These services typically confirm license verifications and some go as far as background checks on the contractor.
